ML, Demuslim and Hera got in regular basis 1.5 -2k, and when one of them ends his stream just raid one of the others, they are like the biggest AoE4 streamers- top players. Bonjwa and Grubby being the biggest streamers for AoE4 without doubt. For me it seems that these numbers are not for an esport (just like AoE2),, maybe we have to wait for Riot in order to get a new and good RTS.

Well ofc hera had an amazing month before too because of aoe4 release as november was the first 4 weeks of aoe4 hype. Your statement only makes the stats look even better as he is getting good numbers even after initial weeks of hype around new game . I’m surprised like some too at the price being an issue for some.

I remember seeing AoK (not even Conquerors included) for $50 at Walmart or Target back in 99 or 2000. Then every new game for PS2, Xbox, or Gamecube was also $50 since like 2001. I don’t remember how much N64 or SNES games costed back in early 90s, probably wasn’t much different. $10 increase doesn’t seem like a whole lot, especially with how games today look comparatively to ancient days (wonder how much Doom costed when I played it in 95, can’t remember unfortunately).

I have no issues with paying £50 or whatever the equivalent is for a triple A game. I'm happy to pay more than that.

AoE4 is an AAA Game (even 80.- here), that price doesn't come out of nowhere, the amount of work hours that went into it must translate directly into it.

It's just that for that amount, I've seen a handful of people doing a better job and selling their game for 20.-. That's even more infuriating though, the AoE4 team had every means to make a good game, they didn't have to make more, a good AoE game would likely have a 98% rating on steam, looking at the rating this, very much, bad game garners. Yet they underperform most indie games with hundreds of times the budget.

And also: Yes, I have issues paying £50 and up for any game. I did so 5 times in the Tens. Every single time, pre release info and footage made it sure that the game was worth it, and those 5 games are amongst my favorites. Some among the highest rated games ever. It's easy to spot a AAA game that lives up to the name if you pay attention. If you have doubts pre-release, they'll likely only grow post-release.

If quality, or even popularity, were to define an AAA game, stuff like Stardew Valley or Undertale would qualify.

I think we're good just keeping that tag to the amount of marketing that goes into a game, which is directly reflecting the game's overall budget.

so you basically say AoE4 for example is an AAA game because it was planned to be one, like a Ferrari is developed to be an AAA car or something.Seems a quite objective way to define AAA games, thus interesting.

For me it was always quite clear that the budget is the factor whether a game is AAA or not. But not absolute numbers but relative to the market. Usually the development time and price tag correlates with it too. How many copies get sold is irrelevant, then the AAA title just flopped. When the game quality doesn't look or feel like they had a big budget it's just sad.

For me it's how much was spent on game dev (Budget)

High budget is the only thing that defines AAA games, both for development and marketing. Still they are supposed to be the best any company can make.

In the video-game industry, AAA (pronounced and sometimes written Triple-A) is an informal classification used to categorise games produced and distributed by a mid-sized or major publisher, which typically have higher development and marketing budgets than other tiers of games- that is from wiki, cause other sources skip somethings, i guess that should give you an idea.

The quality on superficial level.
(borderline) mainstream marketing, great graphics, professional voice acting and so on
actual quality doesn't matter for AAA status
QoL quality does matter because clearly unfinished product like AoE 4 which lacks absolute genre fundamental standards like ranked ladder, customizable hotkeys, scenario editor, doesn't deserve to be considered AAA (even though it tries to be perceived as one). The graphics are also grossly disappointing.

 

I would define it over the 'game size'. Like how many top features it includes (or will include) and the overall budget and thus also development hours calculated for it. And I guess it's a AAA or at least AA game indeed.

I agree with the idea of considering an AAA game one that is given the high price tag because this is the clearest way the game publisher can signal to the market that a certain project has the production conditions (big budget) which people associate with AAA games. It then becomes natural to say that a game is not an AAA game if it is shoddy mess like AoE4 because an AAA game is in turn a shared expectation by game consumers about the quality of a product being manufactured under those conditions. AoE4 was given the resources necessary to be an AAA game but does not meet this set of expectations, which means it is an AAA game in potential but not an AAA game in actualization.

Well not exactly, unless you playing on voobly, but I don't understand why ppl do play there anyways.
I mean aoe2 is kind of 22 years old game, but you can't say that when we are talking about graphics while it was remade 2 years ago with way way better graphics than it initially had.
