Current Situation on Aoe4 and Aoe2

Watching right now and people just talk about the games. Idk, maybe it was worse earlier.
Yesterday aoe2 vs aoe4 dominated Hera's stream but most of people were talking about it calmly.
The trolling by minorities was happening from both sides.

There's something I'd like to say to people who see toxicity tho. Are you sure it isn't confirmation bias? You heard about one group being toxic and now pay more attention to it. What I noticed is lots of people are very prone to seeking negativity where there is none. Please remember twitch chat doesn't promote well thought out long sentences which makes many messages more crude than intended. There's language barrier too, majority of aoe community has English as second/third language.
Many people go "toxic aoe2 fans hating aoe4" upon merely seeing someone say they dislike how aoe4 looks. And then they circlejerk each other how superior they are and how sad anyone preferring aoe2 is. Overreacting like that is even worse than people complaining about one game or another imo. Such attitude only makes the division stronger. Ridiculing people for being unhappy can result in stronger retaliation and nobody gains anything from that in the end. Quite often there's several times more people complaining about "toxicity" than people being actually toxic, assuming any are present at all. It's a weird situation but surprisingly common one, noticed it countless times outside of aoe too.

The funny thing about it is, it's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy thing. Having in mind, that AoE4 could replace AoE2 in the competitive aspect people freak out so much that they forget to create a welcoming atmosphere for newcomers that could keep the game and competitive scene alive, if and when the current pro scene switches over to AoE4. So instead of being relaxed and enjoy themselves while people stream AoE2 and AoE4 alike they create this horror scenario where AoE2 is not going to be there anymore tomorrow, or rather in the next 2 hours, or rather now. A bit insane, I would call it.

AoE2 will survive this with the support of its community
- watching AoE2 streams
- organizing tournaments including funding
- just accepting that there is a new game in the franchise that people play
- getting over the internalized negativity and conception of enviousness
- being open-minded and creating a welcoming/wholesome atmosphere for people
- do one's own thing and just play/watch the game
- give people the incentive to play/stream the game

Don't forget, the whole community-made infrastructure around AoE2DE is much better than that for AoE4. _We_ all built that up around the game. Calm down and enjoy yourself. ;-)

Viewership wise things seem to getting back to normal for aoe4. Currently it's prime streaming time.

Your view is a bit biased, towards the end of the stream less mods were on that were taking care of this procedure. It got a lot better over the day in comparison to the morning. Just take it as that.

My guess is that a lot of pros are burned out on aoe2. If you have several thousand hours invested, you will eventually get bored of it. Also true for non-pros who have less hours invested.
DE brought some fresh things into aoe2 but it's two years old now and dev support isn't making it's future exciting as it had it's ups and downs.
aoe4 can't be a replacement because it's not similar enough to aoe2 but it has enough similarities that a lot of people will be more interested in it than in aoe2 for the next half year at least.
What's more important than aoe4 is how much support aoe2 is going to get before Microsoft ditches it and what the community will do with it afterwards.

I can't see myself going back to aoe2 de anytime soon. Team games have been broken and mostly unplayable for most of de. So far in aoe4 we get TG in 5-7 min with an issue once every 5 games compared to taking 30+ min in de. I also like playing something new. I hope that they fix hotkeys, hitboxes and balance issues for aoe4 sooner than later or I can see myself getting frustrated with the new game.

AOE2 is always gonna be bae because childhood, and AOE4 is the kind of cartoony/appeal to wide audience that honestly I can't stomach anymore.

i think that no one should change a game because is old. if the game is good, why change for something that is not better but new?? i dont understand.
another thing that i understand but not fully understand. games like CSGO, LoL, Dota2, they are older than, lets say, age2 DE, and there are pros that play from 5+ years, and they are not burned.
in this moment, aoe4 is not better than aoe2. like i said before, i dont see how aoe4 will be competitive, have the emotions that aoe2 generate.

Currently watching Hera's AoE2 stream, and it's kinda horrifying honestly. His chat is like 50% people trashing him for playing AoE4, 50% people asking when he'll be streaming AoE4 next. He's visibly regretting deciding to practice for KotD on stream, and talking about how he's going straight back to AoE4 after the tournament.

Honestly people should have realized what his focus would be by seeing his new overlay...

MBL is being realistic, i was wondering what was EGC genesis, why would a new company from nowhere would decide to host and invest weekly tournaments? it makes no sense, they have no guaranteed numbers of anything as the game was brand new, then i guess EGC is just a make up company for microsoft or world edges, they probably have a budget of 500k usd or even more to keep hosting those tournaments, being administrated by a non commercial company like microsoft or any of their associates allows them to do those invited-closed-restrictive events.

Somehow a lot of aoe2 pros knew about "the potential" of the game so they are going to stay there until the budget runs out, we are all going to witness it after kotd4 ends.

I have been avoiding this discussions about aoe4, cause i got sick of the obnoxious promotion among aoe2 content creators, seeing aoe2 twitch numbers as low as only 300 viewers worldwide was unexpected and almost heart breaking, i mean people can enjoy a new game and stream it but imagine being a sub of an aoe2 channel for 2 years and all of the sudden they switch to a game you don't enjoy, ofc you will complain it is like having a sub for national geographic but getting history channel aliens content ._. how would you feel about it, it is just a matter of time to stop watching it.

AoE4's viewership is also tanking rapidly though, if there is cash for AoE4 it's going to end up in a Heroes of the Storm type situation where a company is pumping money into a game without organic growth.

What AoE2 had going for it was that the growth was natural/organic up until Microsoft got involved and accelerated everything. AoE4 doesn't have that grassroots background at all - everything I've seen so far does not suggest it is the quality of game that will have the sustainability to continue without Microsoft's money propping it up.

And when there isn't a real/organic scene, people can feel it, and even when a sponsor tries to make it happen, usually the viewership will never happen.

Why should he stop swearing? Words exist to be used. It shows how much emotion he feels on that topic.

As long as arguments follow and post doesn't consist solely of swearing and insults, i don't see anything wrong with it. It's a manner of expression.

In many countries swearing at someone is crime, including his country, Australia (not sure AOEZone fits public description of Australia though).

That said, I'm pretty sure in majority of the world it's simply seen as rude behavior. But well, there are many other rude behaviors too. False accusations for example are in my opinion a lot more rude than cussing at someone. So i don't really see any logic in getting angry over some swear words when other stuff, arguably a lot worse, gets less attention.

Well false accusations are also punishable, but swearing someone who throws false accusations is not a way to deal with them. Two wrongs don't make one right. Anyway, let's not deviate too much from thread.

Swearing as a crime is one of those laws that exist to stack charges on somebody the police don't like. Nobody actually gets charged with casually swearing, or even swearing at police, unless they really don't like you.
