The settings for this tournament were great! It is a way of playing/spectating age of empires that i have never seen before, and that says a lot as someone that has seen a lot of tournament play. Looking to future tournaments, I would like to see other experimental settings since there are so many settings in age of empires that unfortunately see no use. Before your KOTH tournaments unfortunately KOTH was not seen in high lvl, and t90 does a lot to promote regicide which is great. There are plenty of other setting combinations that deserve a tournament either bc they are as fun as regicide or KOTH, or simply to shake up the game like with these settings (which were also pretty fun). Many of the most popular games on youtube on a variety of channels are games with different settings.
That said a few precautions should be taken. If there is clearly a strongest civ with particular settings then that civ should be banned and civ variety should be promoted. This tournament did a great job i feel with the pick civs bc they were unable to be reused. This concept should be extended if the settings promote enough civ variety.
With your dedicated streaming over a short period of time, i am confident and top players are confident in a good tournament even when the settings are wacky. Keep up what you are doing. My only wish is if more tournaments with wacky settings were successful such as the canceled "kings in the castle" 4 way regicide tournament. When a streamer is not dedicated, pros feel unsure about coverage and i think these settings can not exist which is unfortunate. With the success of the t90 series and your series, i feel like admins and streamers should have a closer relationship beforehand with the streamers, and thus a streamer as admin seems to always have success.
Enjoyed a lot, as a feedback, i would only make it open for more people! The specific amount of res made it more intense due to instant fightings in most/all games, very nice and fast paced series make it really fun to watch.
It was a great tournament and I think there is nothing to criticize. Just two things I didn't like although it's simply a matter of personal preferences.
1) Deleting straggles should be banned (I'd like to see this in standard aoc as well but I know it won't happen). I have always considered it one of the dumbest things in this game.
2) Change continental for something else. This map has been overplayed with the same civ (japaneses) most of the games and it's probably the best civ there. I'm pretty sure that the next time people will just pick japaneses, build fast forward walls, fishboom in the back, castle age min 15-16 into xbows. Over and over.
I enjoyed a lot the tournament, and the games were fast pace, which made the tournament super compact. Though, these settings look really unforgiving in term of what strategy you pick before the game stabilizes. But you cannot do anything about that.
I agree with Nicov: deleting stragglers should be banned.
Agree deleting stragglers should be banned and that there is not enough civ variety w these settings on continental. Future tournaments should "weed out" beforehand maps that have a "best" civ and strategy.
Very fun to play, intense and action from the get go.
Weekend events are always a lot of fun, but I do see the issue with limiting participants.
More stuff like this would be fun though, and maybe a larger map pool for home maps, rather than the same map pool as the set maps. Playing around with different options as well, maybe a Regicide start, maybe one with standard instead of conquest, just stuff to add more options and variety.
loved the settings. were something fresh and gave room for different things like arch rush minute 3 11
thanks for the host, nili, i watched almost all the games on the tournament and it was really really fun
Not really a feedback but related question. Can we expect TG tournaments with these settings? or castle age start?
Imo it's getting boring to see TG tournaments where only Mongol, Mayan, Hun, Persian or Spanish civs are picked, pockets make kts and flanks go xbows.
I think TG with castle age start would be full of action from the beginning of the match and new crazy strategies.
