Who doesn't like the rambling of a rusty 2k player?
I picked up the game again recently after being pushed by a local friend to give it a try again. There was this new world cup happening and maybe my ex team mates were willing to have me on the team again . Nationcup has brought me back to this game numerous times. Nothing more fun that fighting for Canada. That didn't go as planned with a limit of 3 to a team leaving me teamless. I figured lets play 10-20 games anyway because why not?
Here I am having completed 99 games in 1v1 ladder, posting my thoughts after the long break.
1. I really thought that I would be able to achieve ~2k in less than 30 games. The ladder is very different with a lower starting point so that's made it a bit difficult. But I've lost a ton more games that I expected! More on that below. Today I sit at 1930 but feel good about my chances of climbing higher.
2. So many old friends playing again. Meeting them has been a ton fun, especially queueing against them randomly in the 1v1 ladder.
3. The lag free games are an absolute pleasure and are the reason I find myself logging on daily. I've always hated anything higher than 250 ping back in voobly days. I play for the micro wars which seems to be what the game revolves around now. Every game now feels like LAN. wow....
4. Lots of added general functionality to the game and also general changes. This took a while for me to learn about and start using. Unlearning is even harder than learning!!
(Queue orders, hitting boar once only w vils, boars do so much damage to scouts!, melee units absolutely wreck villagers with blocking in no lag, killing boars with TC, villagers fishing by dock, galley wars are dead, and on and on...)
5. The arabia meta is different, but really not so different. I didn't feel like this held me back in any way. After a few games I always 'knew' the right answer or could guess what the enemy is doing. People seem to wall more and earlier, that is the major change as far as I can tell. Earlier drushes, and fast walling. I haven't lost my BIG balls even after this long break, so my base remains open and I continue to play aggressive. I don't feel like it's a disadvantage at this point yet.
6. So many new civs, unique units, bonuses, changes to existing civs. I feel like I need 1000 games to learn the civs the way I knew them before. It's interesting, but I can't really say I enjoy it much. I find myself defaulting to my old favourites. Except my lovely aztecs, they had resorted to nerfing them to the ground, knowing I would be back and would be unstoppable otherwise. Who knows, maybe the next 100 games will change my mind about the new civs.
Cheers everyone. I hope to meet more of you in the game.
