Hi everyone,
I hope this is the right category to post this in. If not I would like to ask a mod to move it where it belongs (or let me know how to move it). Thank you.
So, I just stumbled across the info that AoE II DE (which I love) seems to have a real security and cheating issue due to it being based on old AoE code from the 2000s.
Source: https://www.gamestar.de/artikel/podcast-aoe-2-cheat-hack,3372066.html (sry it is german), RedRocket Team (they are the ones who found it: https://redrocket.club/).
It seems to have been found and reported to the Forgotten Empires Team about seven weeks ago and they have pledged to fix it. Though they only responded after games media poked Micorosft for answers, which I find disappointing. I have not seen any mention on this on the patch notes page on steam.
Now here are some questions:
> Does anyone know what the timeline is. When/If there will be a patch?
I assume it's not an easy fix but any ETA estimate would be nice.
> How is your experience with cheating in AoE 2 DE online games?
From what I have read it is possible to do anything (control enemy units, control gaia units, cancel techs, kill units, set opponent workers to ilde, ...). Has anyone seen this being used in the wild? I assume smart cheaters will use this in a very subtle way.
I am also a little worried. The game itself is suffering from a lot of "nuisances". I am not here to blame the devs though. God knows what pressure (time & money) they are under. Yet, when it comes to security I think this should take precedence overy any feature. Let's hope there is no Remote Code Execution bug hiding in the code somewhere.
Sorry if this has already been posted/asked here. I did a quick search for "cheat" and found nothing therefore I assume it's "news". I have also made a post on the "official" forums but I think this community is more up-to-date ;-)
Thank you for reading and GL HF EVERYONE !
