I’m not a pro, so take this with a grain of salt as it were, but my personal guess is that there’s three reasons:
1. It’s not quite as “open” as your standard Arabia. It’s definitely got bigger and more important tree clumps, and they’re often situated around hills and cliffs. It’s easier to wall, IMO.
2. There’s often several ponds on Cenotes, and those can often have at least some shore fish, but I’m not 100% sure how many. Being that map gen is random and unique every time, they’re often “biased” towards one player or another; that is, they’re often more beneficial to one player based on their location. And again, they can assist walling in the right spots.
3. You asked about team games, but as far as I’ve watched, Arabia is a very rare choice for team games. Most TG maps are ones that are team wallable or heavy on water, and that have ample wood. Arabia is none of those.
A pro or someone with more substantial experience in TG play or with the map meta could probably answer this better. But when it comes down to it, I’ve never noticed Cenotes to be all that special of a map, and Arabia is ***the*** competitive map in AOE2.
