Britons are Celts not British

Their descendants are the modern English nation, that alongside the Scottish, Welsh and Irish nations (descendants of the Celts). These nations created a united kingdom, the British civilization.You can say this is true but only partially

The Britons are the Welsh, Manc, and Cornish. Not the English.

The Britons fought against the Romans and are a Celtic Tribe. After the Romans left you had the romano-Britons. Who were wiped out by succesive anglo-saxons tribes, and pushed to the corner and coasts.

Scotland was the Picts at the time of the Britons. They were the tribe the romans couldn't defeat, and therefore control the full island, and in turn the reason Ireland was not invaded.

Anglo-Saxons were then nearly wiped out by The Vikings. King Athelstan first King of England - Anglo-land

Meanwhile the Picts, pre-Scotland, was taken over by the Celts.

Maybe Should do a new patch with English or Anglo-Saxon.

I kinda agree, I find it very weird that this has been unnoticed throughout the years. I always feel a bit awkward whenever I pick Britons cause of this.

The anglo saxon invasion came from where you came from lad, yous* are the extra civ. But ok

You don’t need a new civ, you just need to rename the existing one. A lot of historic accuracy issues in the game could be fixed by simply changing names and visuals with no impact on gameplay. I don’t think it matters though, because what the civs are is in most cases completely undefined and inconsistent anyways

Well, the Teutons got rekt by the Romans in 101 BC and for some reason still appear as the Germans/"Teutonic" Order (which btw is called Deutscher Orden/"German Order") in Aoe2. Like Barbarossa was a Teuton... I know it is not accurate, but it has been that way for a long time. Just leave it at that, renaming Unique Techs is weird enough for players who have been around for some time

Britons have existed in game since 1999. English or something similar would have been better name for that civ, but it is too late to change it. I think renaming original civs would be so wrong.

agreed a new english civ would be triffic. Longbows came from Briton, Welsh.

It's fine how it is. It is clearly the former given that the inclusion of Longbowmen is fairly clearly a reference to the English armies of medieval times and Celts have their own civ.

read the first post, but i'll spell it out again. you contradicted yoursel twice. Longbows came from Wales (britons) not Enlgland (anlgo-saxons). Celts and not- pre-anglo saxons tribes they are flemish/fresians etc. Celts that live in Great Britain don't consider themselves British and never have done. Britons are the welsh/manc/cornish.

Two completely different civilizations.

I like this thread, with Welsh heritage I've always felt confused with Celts and British. Especially when the campaigns even switch civs like Welsh from Britons to Celts halfway through just to make it more confusing.

They did add Sicilians which although is named for the island they are also supposed to represent the Saxons or Normans. They can somewhat fill in that gap if you can ignore the name. This is the reason they were a feature civ in the Battle for Scotland to represent the invaders.

This does feel un-resolved though, especially seeing how inconsistently which civ stands for which group during the campaigns in this area.

The Britons is a bit a messy on the other hand, since they represent both the post-Romanized Celtic/Brittonic peoples and the meld with Anglo-Saxon and later Norman conquerors. So the linguistic and political continuity and cohesion are just not there to justify them as a civ.

I think it's Britons as the Anglo-Saxon kings did occasionally refer to themselves as King of the Britain's or Bretwalda.
Also as much as it saddens me the Welsh seem more grouped in with the Britains purely due to when they were conquered which means for a lot of the games time period they were under English control. Hence many of the great English victorys being built upon Welsh longbow men.
One last point I think you mean Manx not Manc. Manc is generally short for Mancunian as in from Manchester not the isle of Mann

I did learn most of my medieval history from playing Age of Empires 2 as a child so I think renaming them would be worth it. Also I would love if they actually changed Britons so we don't have to play against 8 range xbow anymore.

People in the British Isles can be considered represented in the game by Celts, Britons, Vikings, French, and probably some others, depending on the timeframe you want to think about.

I don't think there's much point in trying to define a precise, narrow timeframe for the game (it's over a period of like 500+ years) and then assigning each modern country a single civ to represent them. It's not like civ bonus and techs are picked solely for historical accuracy anyway.

Yes this is probably the most accurate summary. Let's face it, the British isles are quite mixed and messy. There's no easy or clean way to summarize it with one civilization or people. Even in medieval times things were complicated.

You've got a Celtic foundation reinforced by Roman presence then washed over with Anglo-Saxon dominance and then augmented by both Viking and Norman (French) influences.

So what do you call these people? Normans? Saxons? None are terribly accurate because it would be omitting significant representations. So Britons was probably picked more as an ethno-geographic term. After all Great "Britain" is commonly used for a large swath of the "British" isles.

"Britons" may not be 100% accurate but perhaps it is the least inaccurate. Unless you want a civ that's called BritonCelticRomanSaxonVikingNormans.
