Recently I've noticed the formats in a couple of competitive formats (ECL, LOTH) have included later stage rounds with a BO3 setting. In the past, such a short series was almost always reserved for qualifying rounds in which the gap in skill between the two players and/or teams was so huge that a BO5/BO7 would seem excessive.
But for competitive tournaments, in stages at which the two sides are very close in skill, I just don't see a BO3 as a meaningful enough sample to really provide a definitive result. Just wondering how other people felt about this... whether it be spectators or players involved in the actual events. And yes, I understand the time constraints argument, but I do think there needs to be a balance between time friendly events and still maintaining the competitive integrity of said events.
