Official Announcement​

The biggest and most prestigious team game tournament of Age of Empires II is finally making its return. It is long overdue, but we cannot be more excited to share with you that Battle of Africa will once again be happening, and we are incredibly excited to share the details with you.

All games from the main event will be broadcast live starting from Thursday the 2nd of June and ending with the grand final on Sunday the 26th of June. During this time, sixteen teams will be playing in a group stage for the initial three rounds while finishing it off in the last weeks in an exciting single-elimination final stage with everything on the line and a chance to win a significant portion of the $30,000.00 prize pool.

Up to eight teams will immediately qualify for the main event based on previous tournament performances, while everyone else will have time prior to the main event. Two weeks of qualification will occur from Monday the 16th of May to Sunday the 29th of May - allowing up to eight teams to qualify.

As a viewer, you will catch the face of every player in the tournament, experience professional casting, see the player's point of view during intense moments as well as get insights into what goes on in the voice communication during games.
We can practically guarantee that we will see every single civilisation in the game, even the ones from the brand new Dynasties of India.

1st place: $10,000.00

The list of maps is available and shown below; however, the map pack is still being developed and will be released in the upcoming week. Watch out for the three brand new maps, as well as one first-timer featured in this instalment of Battle of Africa 3.

All further information, rules and settings will soon be published in the official handbook. Signing up is already possible here, under the assumption that the handbook will be read once released. Up to five players can be registered per team.

The event will offer entirely open streaming, given that the streaming rules and conditions are respected and adhered to.

If we can expect a mixture of BoA 2 and KotD 4 (in terms of quality both in production/casting and teams/gameplay), then it can only be great.

Something I rly love about Memb and his Tournament is that he's always trying to improve them and change things instead of just increasing the prizepool and being like "never change a running system".

I hope facecams and Voice-Chat won't be ahead of the game (I think at NAC facecams were not rly being synced because of technical issues) or smth like that, don't remember how that was at KotD in terms of facecams.

Also curious about how to make sure every Civ gets's played, like with 42 Civs you could make a BO7 and every Civ get's drafted, but if the series ends after 4 games you won't see every Civ, so rly curious what we will see in that regard (Group Stage with Play all 7?)

gone, dont think arabia is needed, been always there and i didn´t miss arabia in return of the clans, so we decided remove it and bring more variety on maps.

we dont make play all games, in many situations tend to useless games, we want games that matters 100%.

facecames IN KOTD4 was synced and in BOA3 will be synced.

About civlizations, we are confident we will see some great deciders like we did in BOA2, still alot civlizs can happen with draft instead of hidden pick, and never mirror.

About prizepool, we think 30k is great for a 3v3 event, the more the better? yes, but we want make more events.

 

Finals of Battle of Africa 2 is the only tournament I have watched more than two times. Game four and the last one are literally my meal when I feel down or I´m sick. Definitely considering this tourney as my personal S-tier.

This is a good call. Arabia games were by far the least interesting of the set in BoA2.

such an amazing tournament. memb is safing aoe 2 so hard right now (to gether with jordan). i am almost crying of joy and happiness.

 

Aguasome news Memb! BoA2 was one of the best tournaments in Aoe2 history. Hoping BoA3 will surpass that!

I think recording voice communication, if done well, could be a great addition. It's always funny and interesting to watch the streams of aM or GL members when they play together, so hopefully we'll be able to see that carry over to Membs stream.
In CSGO they have these fragments where they show the communication of teams during an important round and it's very interesting and gives an insight into the teams mentality.

It's gonna be hard to determine when to listen to the communication though, but I trust Memb and his crew will figure out a good way.

 

Facecams, ok.. even though not everyone is comfortable streaming their face during focus to thousands of people (not all of us are streamers used to this sort of thing).

Voice communication, I don't know how that is supposed to work but that i feel is kinda infringing on privacy, let alone how would that work with different languages (chinese, vietnam etc.).
I don't personally think viewers are entitled to know my teams' mentality or whatever other private thing that might be mentioned during the game, just for the sake of entertainment.

I do realise this is already happening in the very top of professional play in other games, but AoE is something else.

I mean with AM/GL its gonna be very interesting. But what about WWP/Suomi? Will we have a translator for them or are we only getting such insight from the english communicating teams? I'd be fine with both.
I'm also very interested in the communication in those high pressure situations. I think we got some of it in Rotc when Heart was switching between discussing stuff and playing.
But I share your concern on when to implement it. Maybe it could be more of a highlight/analysing thing, when you can get the first hand reaction of the players at a certain point/critical situation. But it seems difficult to include it on the fly.

 

I think face cams/ voice should never be mandatory and only up to the players
