some remarks:
more combinations are possible, but I left those out of the poll since they don't have much benefit.
what colors you like to be adjacent/opposing another is very subjective, that is why I think it is important to vote.
A: round the clock
pro:
- intuitive
- easily scripted
- not many clashing colors*
con:
- flanks are not the same colors consitently for 2v2,3v3,4v4
- no team colors
- p4 belongs to team2 in 2v2 and 3v3, but to team1 in 4v4
- clashing colors*
B: from left to right
pro:
- not many clashing colors*
- intuitive
- easily scripted
con:
- flanks are not the same colors consitently for 2v2,3v3,4v4
- no team colors
- p4 belongs to team2 in 2v2 and 3v3, but to team1 in 4v4
- clashing colors*
C: cold vs warm + from left to right
pro:
- complements ECL standards
- easily scripted
- team colors
- always face the same color opponent (in 2v2,3v3,4v4)
- not many clashing colors*
con:
- flanks are not the same colors consitently for 2v2,3v3,4v4
- clashing colors*
D: cold vs warm + round the clock
pro:
- complements ECL standards
- easily scripted
- team colors
- not many clashing colors*
con:
- flanks are not the same colors consitently for 2v2,3v3,4v4
- clashing colors*
E: cold vs warm + flanks always same color
there is one variation that generates a slightly different pattern in 4v4 (1,7,5,3 vs 2,8,6,4 instead of 1,5,7,3 vs 2,6,8,4)
pro:
- complements ECL standards
- easily scripted
- team colors
- flanks are the same colors consitently for 2v2,3v3,4v4
- always face the same color opponent (in 2v2,3v3,4v4)
- not many clashing colors*
con:
- clashing colors*
F: cold vs warm + flanks always same color (randomized)
choose pocket/flank position, but random where exactly within team. Main take-away from this 'randomization' is that it now is impossible to strategize precisely who your adjacent pocket will be, and who you're up against.
pro:
- complements ECL standards
- team colors
- flanks are the same colors consitently for 2v2,3v3,4v4
- more randomness, harder to strategise
- not many clashing colors*
con:
- not many clashing colors*- more difficult to script
- clashing colors*
- more randomness, harder to strategise

* clashing colors:
What colors are easy to sitinguish can be very subjective. Here is my personal preference:
I think these combinations can be considered to clash:
blue&green
bue&purple
bue&teal
blue&grey
red&purple
red&orange
green&teal
green&grey
yellow&orange
I also understand that red-green can be troublesome for colorblind people.
For me personally the problem is especially noticable when groups of knights are fighting (they only have little color indications that reveal what player they belong to)
