Age Royale - Battle Royale Preview

Battle Royale is coming to Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition in the upcoming November Anniversary Update, and we’ve planned a massive launch tournament to celebrate! Battle Royale pits up to 8 players against each other in a free-for-all contest fought to the last combatant standing.

The Contest Begins​

Sixteen players & casters will enter the battlefield with only a few units under their control, but as they explore the map they will find and capture supply and military buildings. The supply buildings begin a resource trickle, the more under their control the faster they will gain resources. Military buildings allow the training of units and to rally your forces onto the battlefield. The more you control, the faster you can bolster and replenish your armies.
However, be vigilant – these buildings may not be yours forever. Any other player can take those away by eliminating your defenses and defending units. Your opponents aren’t the only danger in Battle Royale. The map will slowly constrict, destroying anything caught in its way.

You’ll see a mix of casting and gameplay as players alternate between casting and playing their heats, with the champions continuing to the final showdown and a shot at the title of Battle Royale Champion.

Expert players that we know and cheer for will battle it out alongside community favorites to see who is the last player standing and earn a share of the $10,000 prize pool!

1st = $2,700
2nd = $2,000
3rd = $1,500
4th = $1,250
5th = $1,000
6th = $750
7th = $500
8th = $300

Spoiler: Format & Settings

Participants will be split into 2 groups of eight players, and after playing four games the top four players with the most points scored will advance to the Final!

There they will play a further two rounds to decide the overall placement & crown a winner!


Players will earn points based on their placement in each round: 1 point for 8th, 2 pts for 7th, up to 8 points for 1st place. See the score sheet here.

In the case of a tie between 2 or more players, they will be ranked on the number of high placings they have. The player with the most 1st placements would be ranked ahead. If it is still a tie, the player with the most 2nd placements, continuing down until most 4th placements. If it is still a tie the players will play a further FFA round among themselves to determine placements.
Example: Two players have a score of 22, split as P1 = 8+6+7+1 & P2 = 7+8+5+2. Both players have the same number of 1sts (8 pts) & 2nds (7 pts), but P1 has a 3rd place (6 pts) while P2 does not. Therefore P1 will be ranked ahead of P2.

Despite having some very good players, aoe2 isnt quite popular in Vietnam.

That website is not a good source for player counts per country, it always misses some players. The aoe2 companion mobile app on the other hand is much more accurate.

For example aoe2club says there are only 66 vietnamese players in RM 1v1. Aoe companion shows 188 players.
For teamgames aoe2club says only 84 vietnamese players. Aoe companion: 214 players.

Still not much, but its substantially more than shown on aoe2club.

 

FWIW, I think the confusion / frustration was the fact that Microsoft plunked down $10k on this, which compared to bigger, competitive events seemed like a grossly disproportionate amount of money for what amounted to be a glitch filled friend's and family show match. While it's great that they've opened the checkbook, it's frustrating to see what is assumed to be a decent chunk of the resources they're willing to spend on prizepools in a given year spent on an event such as this one.

I don't think it's an unreasonable thought, and I also hate the argument that "no matter what MS does people will complain!". That's just not true, at the end of the day, I am very happy to have had this event vs them just not spending an additional $10k. But if the option was spend $2k on this prize pool, and put $8k into a competitive tourny prize pool, that's a no-brainer. I doubt the viewership numbers would have been any different.

Yeah the event was very fun to watch but holy **** this was - in relation to other tourneys at least - way too much prize money to throw at a only-2hrs, heavily civ dependent, laggy, droppy, invite-only, just-for-fun game mode. I mean if this means they'll throw appropriate amounts (i.e. more than this) at all normal tourneys now I'll happily eat crow. But that's a shitload of prize money lol.

Pretty impressive to present your opinion as a factual statement. Nice ego you've got there buddy. Seems like I do have better idea about the topic considering that I at least know who Zak is (Zak from ZeroEmpires 11).
You do understand that you are complaining that a company is using their own EMPLOYEE for marketing purposes, right? Perphaps you should write a letter to Microsoft telling them to hire someone else, I'm sure they will take your 'factual statements' very seriously.

Well I was open minded about it and kinda hyped but I gotta say it's not for me. I didn't realize it's basically CBA and while I'm sure there is an audience out there for that, I'm not convinced it provides the definitive AoE2 experience.

 

I went into this with a lot of questions but I was very pleasantly surprised by the event. Some thoughts:

- The scenario itself is pretty well thought out and also well executed, compared to some other pre-DE BR maps this felt very fun to play. I liked the variety in the maps, some I liked more than others but overall they were really nice.

- I get that this is just a "fun" game mode, but I would consider making it a little bit more balanced. The two biggest factors for that were 1) civs, if you get Britons or Incas there's not much you can do, whereas any civ with FU paladin and FU cavalry archers are crazy strong; 2) luck factor, as in finding buildings quickly and having neighbours that leave you alone. I imagine the scenario would be more fun if you feel like you're in control just a little bit more.

- Game performance is a huge issue. Despite having 16 players who all have above average PC specs, there was an enormous amount of PC lag to the point that it became unplayable. Also a couple players crashed randomly. It might be due to the build that was used, but if the lag is similar in the release version, then I can imagine every game will have at least one player with a potato PC who turns the whole game into a powerpoint.

- I'm really concerned how the "FFA" aspect works when you're playing with random people. What is stopping a group of friends from queuing up at the same time, either ending up in the same game or alt F4-ing, and teaming up on the other players?

So yeah overall I'm still pretty sceptical about how this will go once it's released, but if it works as intended I think it would be a great addition to DE.

They are free to do whatever they want with their winnings so massive props to the ones that decided to pocket it instead and not appeasing a couple of posters on aoezone dubiously complaining about the large prize pool.

Well you know yourself that's false as all of them had been playing games before stream and know that sniper could not attend event because of encountered problems
