The most impressive part about the Age of Empires competitive scene is that it's been around forever. So many players lost to time. When the game first came out there were all these tournaments, huge prize pools. Then AOE3, and the dark times of AOE2 started. When there was no support for the game. The rise of Voobly. How channels like T90 brought more love to the community and found these interesting characters like Fat Slob and Hoang.
The point is, there is a story to tell here. I think everyone should take the time to watch the "Super Smash Brothers Documentary." It is an amazing story and has a somewhat similar life as AOE2. Link here.
The original upload achieved over 15 million views and revitalized a dying community (since been removed). Melee (the game the documentary focuses on) is still wildly popular today largely due to the doc.
The point is, I think there's a story to tell here. Even though AOE2 is far from dying (in fact it's a more vibrant community now than ever), I think we are doing ourselves a disservice not telling these amazing stories about these amazing people. If anybody is willing to help with pre-production and storyboarding this doc with me, hit me up. I've already talked a bit with Nili, and I've heard that Zero Empires has a lot of cool OG information about past players and games. I've tried getting in contact with him, but he's a busy man 11.
I'm looking for people who have been around the community for a long time or have experience planning out long projects like this documentary. Who are the old players to look for? What are the storylines we can seek out? Quality questions to ask? If anyone is interested, just let me know.
As for me, I'm a 50k subscriber YouTuber (WillyMacShow) and plan on editing and spearheading this project.
