Well, I am trying to get my head around trying to map the medieval civilization that the game has excluding the ones mentioned in DE, to modern day countries. (DISCLAIMER) My intentions are purely from knowledge point of view, and I do not wish to offend anyone.
Many of them directly translate. For instance,
Franks -> France.
Britons -> Great Britain.
Celts -> Scotland and Ireland.
Turks -> Turkey.
Spainish -> Spain.
Magyars -> Hungary.
Slavs -> Russia.(entire USSR)
Persians -> Iran (and Iraq?)
Koreans -> North and South Korea, including Korean Peninsula.
Japanese -> Japan.
Chinese -> China.
Malay -> Malaysia.
Vietnamese -> Vietnam.
Indians -> India. (Although here, I believe the game civilization name should have been Indus)
Burmese -> Burma.
Khmer -> Laos and Cambodia.
Ethiopians -> Ethiopia.
Portugeese -> Portugal.
Vikings -> Scandinavia + Iceland + Greenland.
Now, here is where it gets a little fuzzy. (for me atleast)
Teutons, I believe are modern day Germany. But there was a reference in a movie Inglorious Bastards, where they were referenced as Huns. But Huns never had this rich in terms of religion. Infact, they had Atheism. So who are the Huns.
Saracens - I am inclined to believe that Saracens evolved to become modern day KSA. But in the Saladin campaign, Saracens was seen fighting Teutons, along with Jerusalem. Is it okay to say that entire middle east origin can be traced to Saracens.(except for Israel) ?
Mongols - modern day Mongolia, which is fine.But I think Mughals were mongols which dominated south east Asia. There are references - for instance the Mongol leader Tamerlane, in mughal history we hear about Taimurlung. Genghis Khan became Changez Khan. Is this conclusion invalid?
Goths -> Modern day Poland?
Byzantines - are not clear to me. Maybe like the huns, they were early civilizations but have no modern trace.
Aztecs, Mayans and Incas - Entire Latin America and southern parts of North America or South American countries?
