2023 AoE 2 Nations Cup [$18,622 Prize Pool]

Dear AoE 2 community, this topic (Nations Cup Waiting Room) has hurt me a lot. In summer 2020, I already tried to give the community something similar with the 2020 AOElympics while waiting. Many of us believed the follow-up of the great 2017 Nations Cup would come soon, in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022... But it never came.

Therefore, I am offering you my approach. I will organise the 2023 4v4 Nations Cup, starting in around 5 weeks. Registration will be open until Saturday, January 28, 20 GMT. The qualification stage will begin in the following week.
This will be a tournament for fun and prestige. However, if anyone wants to contribute to a prize pool, you can do so via the tournament's Matcherino page: https://matcherino.com/t/nc23 where you also can see the current donation sum at all times.

The exact rules and settings will follow soon, but some important key points are:

• The main event will consist of a group stage (8x4 teams) and a double-elimination knockout stage.
• Max. 4 teams from one nation can enter the main event.
• Teams consist of 4-10 players, substition and addition of backup players will be possible at certain stages of the tournament.
• When a team registers, they have to give list of up to 5 maps which they want to have in the tournament. The maps with the most points will be added to the map pool. So you decide a part of the map pool!
• How exactly the qualifying phase works will depend on the number of registered teams; more about that later.
• A Silver League for teams that don't qualify for the 32-team group stage will happen, if we have enough interested teams.

Think the winners finals could go anyway, so i expect the same 2 teams in the grand final. Dont think that the 1 point in the grand final is a good idea.
love the tournament so far. the only thing is that there were a lot of series that were one sided.

 

might want to spoiler the last post, just in case people read who haven't watched the winner's finals yet but to answer your question:
If you've been following the aoe2 scene for a long time you would already know/assume that Canada has always been a strong team it's just that Hera has improved the most as a team player compared to last NC, sad Canada doesn't have Ra but I don't see him much active in tournaments.

Winner's finals was a really nice watch for me, loser's semi's and loser's finals should also be a nice watch. Glad the 4 relic placement on the Team Island's game (in the WF) wasn't the deciding factor and that the other team could finish it up before wood went scarce.

Loving this tournament a lot so far and despite not having much free time I always try to watch every match of the DE stage.

My plan was to come back and practice really hard to provide a decent 4th player option, but mentalist revealed himself and he'd been active for a good while.

Nation cup is one of my fondest memories from my childhood. I still remember the very first one I played I 2005 with Blade, Poison, and Chris.

I'm super proud of team canada. The team is playing so amazing, with everyone bringing something unique every game. The team synergy is also amazing.

We've scored second 3 times out of the 5 aoe narioncups. I hope we can finally win this one

PS. I wouldn't rule out any of the remaining teams. Finland will have a fight in their hand to get to the grand finals.

For both Canada and Finland it would have been nice to have a title finally, but China A's comeback was impressive and they deserved the win, so I am happy for them.

$18,500 prize pool in the end without any company sponsor is also incredible.

Yes, some players seem to no longer be able to keep up with some of the new players in 1v1, but are still great TG players. That's why we need more big TG tournaments.

if you want the grand finals to start with 0-0, ideally the set should be played twice then if the team from the winner bracket's lose. and only once if they win as that means the team from the loser's brackets lost twice and are out.

in no recent tournament, from DOTA2 or LoL, or CSGO, that were doble elimination, the winner bracket winner was 1-0 from the begining, nor didnt have to loose twice.

if you are in finals, you are in finals. period.

They get a 1 game advantage, rather than having to replay if they lose (which is confusing for viewers, and reduces the hype of the finals significantly)

there is no point, because if they dont loose the series, they dont have a rematch, so your point is baseless. as i told you, in the big esports, when there is a double elimination, both teams begin with 0 points. because final is final

There is plenty of logic in the 1-0, just because you have a different opinion does not mean there is no logic.

That's not true, CSGO uses it as well. (No clue about the others)

What an amazing tournament this was! One of the most enjoyable team game tournament in aoe2 history, hopefully we wont have to wait that long again for the next NC!

While Canada would have probably deserved the win as well, i am so happy for team China for the outstanding performance and the well deserved victory. We know how much pressure the chinese players have to always win and how much backlash they get from parts of the community if they don‘t (e.g. when Vivi and Lyx were considering to retire due to toxic comments).

I also want to point out the great casting by Memb, it‘s very difficult to cast 4v4 and i think he did a fantastic job!

Hopefully we will be blessed with many more of these gems this year!

Then I looked at his profile and he looks to be playing on his main account again (https://aoe2.net/#aoe2de-profile-2806260) since late March, but I saw him the first time on the dashboard today.
Either way, I feel hyped and hope to see him get 2k4+ and play in tournaments again.

 

While usually i don't enjoy watching TG, this was great entertainment. I liked the map pool and nations make things much more interesting than teams no one can't compete against that is also hard to feel attached. Also it's quite good motivation for a-b tier players to try harder to fit well on the last spot of their team, or for those that are great tg players to shine.

 

I enjoyed watching the tourney and was very happy to see it run rather smooth.
Participation, games, streams, prize ... was great.
I'm also glad people joined as admins or support and stood reliably together (from my outside, rather distracted pov). I could see rather/very unreliable and immature behavior be imaginable, given there were several people on board.
