2023 AoE 2 Nations Cup [$15,808 Prize Pool Currently]

Dear AoE 2 community, this topic (Nations Cup Waiting Room) has hurt me a lot. In summer 2020, I already tried to give the community something similar with the 2020 AOElympics while waiting. Many of us believed the follow-up of the great 2017 Nations Cup would come soon, in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022... But it never came.

Therefore, I am offering you my approach. I will organise the 2023 4v4 Nations Cup, starting in around 5 weeks. Registration will be open until Saturday, January 28, 20 GMT. The qualification stage will begin in the following week.
This will be a tournament for fun and prestige. However, if anyone wants to contribute to a prize pool, you can do so via the tournament's Matcherino page: https://matcherino.com/t/nc23 where you also can see the current donation sum at all times.

The exact rules and settings will follow soon, but some important key points are:

• The main event will consist of a group stage (8x4 teams) and a double-elimination knockout stage.
• Max. 4 teams from one nation can enter the main event.
• Teams consist of 4-10 players, substition and addition of backup players will be possible at certain stages of the tournament.
• When a team registers, they have to give list of up to 5 maps which they want to have in the tournament. The maps with the most points will be added to the map pool. So you decide a part of the map pool!
• How exactly the qualifying phase works will depend on the number of registered teams; more about that later.
• A Silver League for teams that don't qualify for the 32-team group stage will happen, if we have enough interested teams.

How to forget those sling days, full team wall, one guy booming forever in feudal age, the fastest guy in team getting the sling and other player just booming that was aoe2 at it's peak lol

Sling just make the already strong teams even stronger, so allowing it is a terrible idea, sling fest ruled aoe events since the release until late 2015 and at that point it was a sling contest.

 

Through matcherino you can also add to the prizepool by liking the pages of sponsors (you can unlike/unfollow later), who then make a small donation to the prizepool of the event. The amounts contributed this way may seem borderline insignificant (20, 30, maybe 50 cents per like), but they do add up, and by merely clicking a few times viewers/players from "poorer" countries, who might otherwise not entertain the possibility of donating, can end up contributing a couple bucks to the tournament entirely for free.

It would definitely be an option and in that case easier, if just one member per team that receives prize money logs in and withdraws the money to then distribute it among their team, as we also will have no idea, how each team wants to distribute their money, as often in long TG tournaments not all team members play equally much.

Yeah, you log in via any of the ones listed.

It might be in your country. Other countries have debit/credit card options as well, although in those cases, it still goes through the PayPal system.

 

Yea it seems like for now payment is all powered by PayPal which is a notable downside imo, even more when PayPal sees donating to matcherino as a service that is worth ~5% fee (in germany or EU).

I assume PayPals domestic/international payment fees aply (even though in this case there is no service like insurance etc from PayPal whatsoever, beyond simply transfering money) and since matcherino is a us based company I assume, payment by US people should be a little bit cheaper. Not sure how much though.
So maybe in the case of gathering money from people without PayPal or if bigger donations are in the plans, it may at least help to do that via a US person.

I know, but I assume you can't send money to a company and the company wouldn't easily be able to allocate that money to a specific crowd funding project.
If it is offered by the company PayPal charges its fees for paying goods and services. If I see it correct that is ~5% fee to accounts in a foreign country (EU/EEA is handled like domestic payments).
Would mean, a EU guy pays 5% to paypal for donating to matcherino in the US and a EU player is charged again 5% if he likes to transfer his prize to his paypal.

I see it is transparent and ofc comfortable for admins to have players sign up and than the admins can just something like click payout and are done, instead of asking for multiple paypal-adresses.
However I would much prefer a 1%+x bankwire fee capped at 5€.

Thought maybe someone here might know about such things.
Like some years ago I didn't know, that it is much better to send money in eg $ and let the conversion be done by your creditcard bank, than converting it by PayPal with their pretty bad exchange rates.

I am aware that this problem will always come up once a nation-based event happens. However,
1. This is just the announcement banner, we will have a different, official, more professional banner to be used by streamers later, and
2. I have already learned that it is safer to talk about "nations" than "countries", because teams will definitely not be based on what is internationally and undisputedly recognised as a "country" or "state".

Displaying Crimea and the Donbas as Russia seems like a very clear and intended political message.

Le prize pool ne s’arrête pas á 5000 dollard, nous acceptons avec soulangement des donations aprés des 5000 dollard aussi.
