If someone were to propose a crowdfunded tournament for AoE2, with nice competitive settings on a variety of maps, I would happily contribute...

I only asked once so far, and the reason was reasonable, because my proposal was a 3v3 tournament and BoA 3 will be too. Just to add it, so nobody shares something that is not true.

I can still apply for something for later in the year again.

From Nili's interview and your thread on WDC, where you stated you were not going to get MS funding in Q1/Q2 2022, I assumed you had asked twice, but thanks for the clarification. I'll add a comment to my original post.

The problem with this operation is that afterwards people have expectations (even more than in normal times).

And it can quickly go wrong if these expectations are not met for those who participate.

The problem here is that the Tournament Coordinator in representation of MS, or any of its partner companies has not been clear in the resources allocated for the age franchise tournaments, of course Age4 being the new kid in the block is going to be the one with the biggest budget, it is a flop as a game?, yes it is, but it is new, so the marketing budget is going to be allocated in that direction. The irony is that 100k tourneys are not enough to make a game an esport, MS has to try harder if they for real want Aoe4 to become an esport which I doubt, and the first step should be: start to develop Age5 .

This is false and needs to stop being repeated everywhere. Villiams secured MS money, not Memb.

Everything else in your post I strongly agree with. It's beyond obvious by now that funds are allocated in a very biased way (none to the 2nd most popular, played and meta-developed map in 20+ year history of the game and a ton to whatever random maybe invited only silliness somebody popular comes up with this Wednesday). Even the fact that after so much begging RF3 only got what it got (not sure the exact amount is public knowledge just yet) when BF scene literally exploded in the last few months, connecting the entire community and the tournament will involve ≈100 great players, is really frustrating. I don't even want to mention Masters of Arena ...

Oh no what did you do? Now some Twitch dude with 6 viewers will copy the idea and get a 200K funding for a aoe4 Platinum league series. 11

Twitch viewership for AOE4 has fallen off a cliff this week, decaying even faster than the playercount. These events are necessary for AOE4 to salvage some basic viewership - basically no one is watching the individual streams and gameplay anymore, so they need to generate new viewers who will stick around. I guess these tournaments are intended to do that.

Don't worry, I think we're closer to the masterplan. Next event will be 200k, 100k for the few players left and another 100k split among the viewers.

Sad that even with a player base about the size of AoE2:HD, only Biper has qualified for NC4, and no one else even made it to the decider games of the qualifiers

Untrue. Kasva made it to the deciders in the first qualifiers.

But it does seem that AoE IV is being dominated by lower-tier/retired Starcraft II players (Bee, Beastyqt, Leenock, MarineLorD, DeMusliM, Vortix, Lucifron7) and players from other parts of the franchise (TheMista, Striker).

Those guys are smart guys, they don't have any chance apart for Ml to make worthy money from SC2,and Blizzard killed WC3 with the reforged edition, they have the time to grind as crazy the game, and skills to milk the money that our generous Tournament coordinator is giving to the constant d...eclining AoE4 Game.

Woops. Sorry, didn't notice that Kasva made it to the decider and then got absolutely demolished 4-1. Very close. Much competitive

Moving the goal posts much...

First they are uncompetitive because they dont make the final round (which is approx top 10 in the world), then they are uncompetitive because they didnt perform better in that final round.

I assume you're one of the people who said TheViper was washed up and sucked when his worst result was a quarterfinal placing in a year of tournaments which placed him as a top 3-4 player in terms of those results. In other words, if you arent the very very best you suck/are worthless and should stop trying.

I don't think I've ever said anything about Viper? But feel free to check my posts bud.
And yes, getting 4-1'd in a qualifier is fairly uncompetitive IMO, but that's just MY OPINION.
Let's be more objective and use Adicos AoE4 tournament rankings, which have Viper and Hera in the top 10 (but condition of Hera continuing with AoE is unknown atm), and kasva and capoch somewhere in the 12-16 range. Tatoh and Daut are top 32ish, and that's about it.

Also? Where did I ever say they are worthless and should stop trying? Those words never left my mouth so maybe calm the **** down buddy Boi. If anything, they obviously need to try a little harder because they aren't placing high enough in tournaments to get any sort of decent prize pool (and don't even hit me with that "we are going to collect donations for prizepool outside the top 8" bullshit).
Given that Capoch and Kasva are trying to make a living off of the age franchise, it's either tournament prize pool or streaming income, and Kasvas stream has been dying since he switched to AoE4.
The point that I was trying to make, is that there are effectively two games these players can be competitive in, AoE2 and AoE4. If they can't be top 10 in AoE4 and can't make sufficient income from streaming, we might lose them from the franchise entirely. This is very bad in my OPINION, since loss of top players effects both games in the franchise

Side note, I also think that the Viper has never really been washed up, but that the year-ish in which he didn't win every single event was one of the best for the game. One of the redeeming qualities of the AoE4 competitive scene is that you never know who will win a tournament

For an admin, you could calm down maybe.

If opinions different from yours infuriate you (just wondering), then you should consider stepping down as an admin of an online forum for the sake of the unbiasedness of the forum and your own mental health.

Otherwise, feel free to ignore the advice. Take Poles on BF and make those nice farms. It's relaxing. Cheers!

Tbh, I didn't watch the set so I can't comment on how competitive they actually were, but a final result says absolutely nothing about how competitive the set was.
You can lose 4-0 where every game was extremely close and could've gone either way but one guy just edged the other out in the end. This gives an end result that might look very skewed where in reality it was a very close set.

I think 2020/2021 disagrees with you. We had Lierrey/Hera/Yo/Viper/Daut all win S tier events.
Viper really didn't re-assert his dominance until late 2021 as AoE4 began creeping into the scene.

Just a response to comments here in general;

- Yes, money attracts money. Big names that already have access to their own funds and own viewership will get priority, that's the case for everything, everywhere. The reality is that a T90 forest nothing sicilians only tournament would still gain far more viewership than a very well organized serious tournament under normal settings with the same funding from someone unknown. That's why that happens.

- The objective of Microsoft isn't to create a thriving competitive scene for all their games. They also don't really have an obligation to do so, IMO, it's a nice bonus. Like any other third party sponsor, funding tournaments is a business decision made to attract attention where they need it. I suspect that a big part of the reason why AOE4 is getting those 2 big tournaments is that they are trying to maintain a bit of momentum while they prepare fixes for the game/take it out of beta and most likely a larger DLC in the summer. It's a new game, and has yes, based on that alone currently more potential to grow.

It's completely normal and standard practice for companies to fund tournaments for new games for a year or so to give it a push and then let the community grow organically after that. Like, that happens for every single fighting game. It happened with AOE2 in the years after release, 95K$ tournament by Microsoft with the release of The Conquerors. Just consider this the AOE4 starting bonus. I'm not sure why people are surprised by that.

- It's very odd to me how the AOE2 community is suddenly behaving like they're being treated as a neglected step child. Microsoft is currently giving competitive AOE2 *far more* funds than they ever have. There was a 25k$ tournament just last month. KOTD4 just ended in December, massive prize pool compared to previous entries, a big part of that is Microsoft. RBW5, 100k$ prizepool, entirely Microsoft. etc... We don't fully know yet what AOE2 tournaments are getting this year, but I can guarantee you that KOTD5 and BOA will again get large microsoft funds. This is something that was completely unheard of even just 2 years ago. And now suddenly people are pretending that Microsoft is trying to kill off the game just because they give another game a bit more?

Before you complain about AOE4 getting more money; ask yourself, why is AOE2 getting any money at all? Does it need it? No, it thrived just fine without it. Does Microsoft have and obligation towards it? Not as far as I can tell, they sell the game, the only obligation they have is to make sure that the product they're selling you works - which they do have a solid team working on. Tournament funding is a bonus. Do they have a strong logical business incentive to invest massive amounts of money into AOE2? No, not really, the game kept itself alive just fine without it. Some tournament money might help keep interest for DLC, but the game isn't suddenly going to grow into a massive esport after 20 years either.

So, as a whole, it might be a bit patronizing to say that but... yeah, gotta learn to be happy with what you get instead of constantly being jealous about greener grass on the other side of the fence.
