It's a trade-off. It's hard to have a civ selection system that both
1) Leads to balanced but interesting civ matchups (i.e. not Turks/Bohemians every Arena game like you mentioned), and
2) Is relatively quick and easy, in that determining civs doesn't take 15+ minutes and distract from the hype...
Some other gems for people who don't want to read the whole thing:
An elegant solution to seeding disputes, players are somehow seeded randomly, but also such that higher ranked players have higher seeds.

If Big Scoob woke up tomorrow with the skillset of a top 5 player, would the damage he would do to the community as a representative of the game be offset by the positive fact that we'd have an objective answer about whether people would excuse his behavior and could close this thread?
I really enjoyed Vinch's casting earlier in the tournament -- I thought he complemented Memb well and I enjoyed his insights, I agree with the others that he often goes into more detail that most others don't. Looking forward to seeing/hearing him again!

I'd strongly agree that 1v1 settings seem extremely (overly?) prominent in the biggest tournaments. Looking at Liquipedia S-Tier Tournaments in 2021 and 2022 I count 14/17 of them to be 1v1, with one 3v3 (BoA3) and 2 2v2s (EW Duos 2, and Two Pools 2.)

The absolute best situation to build one is when you're Mayans on a landmass with 4 enemies and 0 allies. I would recommend placing it next to your TC at the bottom of a hill while being pushed by scouts, knights, monks, and mangonels.
For best results, commit most of your vills to build it...
