Well I think the problem is you think there's a big issue to solve; but like most things in AOE2, the devils in the detail, and things don't need a massive change.

Sure. The main units that are seen in castle age are knights, xbows, seige and monks. The only one you can mass from feudal onwards is archers/xbows. By upgrading from archers to xbows you get a huge amount of useful army very quickly.
