Lyx made this post two days ago which I think was pretty wholesome and interesting, since a lot of people became his fan after the WC series, I figured that it would be nice to give it a translation and share with you guys.

I actually wasn't planning to participate when WC started their sign-ups. Yo said that it's likely the tournament will take place during late night. What I wanted was Yo teaming Vivi, the Chinese Gemini team (Lyx used that phrase) would definitely be the favorite heading into this tournament. Once the clock passes 1AM I'm basically sleepwalking, and my head would go so dizzy that I can't see what's going on outside only one screen, so I didn't want to be his hinderance. A few days later Yo asked me again: How about we two teaming? I asked where's Vivi? He said the couple Vivi and jibatong already teamed up, Tim and CL signed up as well, thus I agreed and had no option but to drag Yo down (yes, that's what he said). I thought that the prize is probably not very high, 1st place probably only gets like 1k$, doesn't matter that much if we lose anyways, I had no idea what's the prize pool was until semi final. So that's how I started the journey in the World Cup.
The first match was against team Bad Koala, him and his teammate IBUYPOWER played pretty aggressive and I think they had a lot of potential in the future. But because Yo went too tryhard on them (
) so we passed the first quali round, then took the following matches with ease and got the first place in the group.
Because of the "one team per country after Ro16" rule, we were forced to play Tim and CL early. Think about it again, this match was the most difficult one we played. G1 Arabia, I was ded after Tim's pressure and then just waited to get carried by Yo cuz no one can match against his Franks, CL shouldn't be a problem, but somehow CL had advantage and Tim also supported with xbows, while I was making farms waiting to get carried. Yo failed his fwd castle and then everything collapsed and it was gg. G2 Golden Pit, I was freaked out when the Burmese guy got his castle up while Yo was still in feudal, fortunately Yo had a good boom and we took the middle. In mid-late game Yo did everything so we tied up but it was tough. G3 Nomad, we somehow had a big disadvantage again, and I was thinking: it would be really bad if we lose this map; the prize pool isn't big anyways so losing wouldn't be that bad. I tried to say "how about we go next game" multiple times but held back again. Finally Yo came back and saved the world. He was so good at rebooming, 3 minutes ago he said he's running his vills, 3 minutes later he said he's imp already. We took a long breath of relief after winning Nomad. The last game on Ghost Lake, I was so ded again, if Yo didn't tell me to go halbs, Tim would have 1v2'ed us. We barely got into Ro8 beating China B, but I realized I had some big problems with my performance. We would lose if I kept playing like that day, and I would drag Yo down so hard. Special thanks to one of the WWP sponsors, he promised to gift anyone omega-rockets (name of the gift on douyu which worth about 300 usd) who get to top10 on ranked ladder. I started to train 1v1s since then. I knew it's unlikely for me to get top10 in 1v1 with my current form, but playing 1v1 helps improving my consistency, plus what if I do get into top10? I felt I got better after a few days of grinding.
Ro8 was against the defending champion Finland A. I don't think I need to introduce them anymore. They're one of the favorites to win the whole thing. Max is one of the best TG player, and Villese was top4 in KotD3 plus a solid archer civ player. Their cooperation is top tier. I checked their 1v1 rating before the tournament and they were ranked 6 and 7, both 2k4+. I thought losing to Finland wouldn't be a shame and I still thought the prize pool was meh so it's not a big deal.
G1 Arabia, we were behind in score the whole time, about 1k diff at max. But we didn't panic since Yo had Magyars while Finland don't get paladins with Slavs. We won the game with one strike when Max had nothing but trying to switch to Boyars. Both of us were saying nice out loud in voicechat after the first game cuz pressure was already on. G2 Acropolis, we saw they had Cumans, so we decided to switch things up. I went for fwd ranges and Yo played "3TC heavy military" (This is sorta a meme that they use pretty often, they refer to FULL booming by saying 3TC), Finland didn't have enough against our mass of army so it was gg after Yo hit imp with a fully boomed eco. G3 Golden Pit, because we f*ed up one of out drafts so it was a game that we pretty much gave up already, we did what we could, there was a chance mid game but we didn't make it. Last game on Nomad, we had superior civs so it was a convincing victory after all. We didn't expect a 3:1 at all. We won this one by strats and good teamplay.
Semi final we played Brazil A. I only got to know the prize was pretty high (almost 1k usd per player for top4) till the first day of semis. I had no idea and my blood pressure jumped instantly (
). BR is our old rivalry, we know them pretty well, vice versa. We watched Brazil vs Vietnam, they have good teamplays too, dogao has perfect eco management and miguel has been known as a solid cav player. The type of pressure Brazil put onto Vietnam in their G1 and G2 also gave us trouble in our games. G1 Arabia we had big disadvantages, but their slinging choices killed them big time, if dogao played standard full army, it would be difficult for us. We won rest of the games expect Ghost Lake, thanks to Yo's carry. We went thru to the finals.
Final against Norway: the best player Viper and KotD3 runner up MbL, the only two 2k5 currently. An hours prior to the matches, I was discussing with Yo. They have the best individual skill and can carry 1v2, especially after watching them play against Spain. Every time after Viper got doubled, MbL can play 1v2. I thought how do we win if we can't even kill one of them. We practiced civ BPs and made predictions of their civ picks, went through the orders of A BB A and such, talked about backup civs if the strongest ones get picked by them. The results of the civ picks, both side had own edges.
G1 Arabia, MbL opened laming. Yo's map wasn't good, and MbL lamed his deers and walled his main gold, the positions of other two golds weren't good either. Plus MbL went drush FC, Yo would have a hard time after MbL hit castle age. I had carto and checked Yo's base, it was bad. MbL had xbows with Viper's FU feudal scouts, Yo had a lot of vills that couldn't work, and I just clicked up. I asked Yo if he needs help, my idea was Viper's castle age time was delayed a lot for sure, so I could hit him before that. But if Yo needs help then I had to help, then Viper would have an untouched eco going into castle age, and MbL would have a better eco with his FC. Yo said he would be fine, I should go hit Viper because attack is the best defense, so that MbL would get pulled away to help, and it worked as planned, Yo was saved. However, Mayans eco and military remains the biggest threat, MbL would have a fast imp time with a much bigger army than I have, if we got pressured first then there would be no hope. What is hope is the 1m92 (a Chinese memey term for frankish paladins, as if they're like a 1.92 meters tall guy IRL) from Yo, but it's a long way to go. So we initiated many crazy long fights, one here one there, which made their xbows running around wasting time. Yo's kts support was strong and fast, his cav could always arrive right after my flare. During mid game, we capitalized on the fact that MbL's main army left his base so we doubled MbL. Yo spread his kts and MbL's eco was crippled. But MbL clicked imp, if he had 50-60 obsidian arrowed arbs to hit Yo, we would have died regardless. Because of the sling, when MbL hit imp, Yo clicked up as well. We held onto the 1m92s from Yo to carry. He hit multiple sides with paladins and 1v2'ed to win the first game. We were finally relieved after gg getting called.
G2 Norway picked Scandi. This map has a beautiful name, also I heard that's Norway, idk if that's true. (
) We picked two late game civ Mongols and Celts. I just tried to harass and delay them as hard as I could. We relied on Yo's Mongols. Yo was booming in tears and in the end he had a good boom, wiped them out with mangudais and siege. That was another win for us.
G3 they picked Acropolis. Our strat this game is me protecting Yo to get to castle age safely. We didn't expect Viper to and go fwd m@as towers and archers, then MbL followed up with fwd siege and camels. That was a successful strat, we were caught off guard and it was an instant loss. Norway scored one game.
G4 was our pick Nomad. My start was titanic because I forgot to make a house (side note: Lyx is probably the Chinese MbL in terms of getting housed, he got his memes for doing that). But one weird barracks from MbL changed the whole game. Yo was planning to go water but he fwd'ed the rax on Yo's face, so Yo played feudal land instead, and hit Viper's stone and gold, which resulted in Viper sacrificing all his eco just to buy a castle. Yo played feudal against both which was the winning move of this game, then he just went booming in tears and I took over against Viper in mid game. Then Yo boomed to imp and was game over. We got match point first.
G5 Norway picked Valley. The Malay elephants was surprising. Viper also had Saracen xbows. We weren't prepared for that, we discussed after the game and thought we could have done better or even win. We killed Viper's army early castle age, but we went too greedy when chasing which caused Yo losing all his cav and led to our disadvantage. Mid game we couldn't do much against their mass of xbows and elephants. Viper also had a sick xbow stack early imp which killed most of Yo's army, I have to say Viper's so good at doing that, he stacked 17 in one tile (side note: Lyx used the term "厕所" which means toilet, that refers to those pockets created by forests/mines or buildings for xbows to hide in, pretty much all the top Chinese players use that term, I think Yo started that
). Norway won another game.
G6 was our pick Chaos Pit (fun fact: someone gave this map a chinese version name called "世外桃源" which Lyx used here, which roughly equals Shangri-La/Utopia). I got Incas which is super strong here. Everything was going as planned, but I lost my eagle early, so I didn't know where Viper's TC was. My fwd vills ran into his TC because of that and it was quite bad, two of my vills were low hp after that. Fortunately I pulled more vills and did armor early so the fwd was stabilized, and was able to hurt Viper's eco. I got to know that when I headed out with my second wave of vills towards MbL, he had good eco and could actually click castle age already but he forgot to, which was one mistake. Also he took a stupid engagement and lost many vills. Yo also killed Viper's gold vills outside so I thought we had the advantage because of those. In retrospect, if MbL clicked castle age, then didn't fight my vills but retreat and take outside, they might still have a chance. After I felt MbL was ded, I asked Yo to just boom and play 1v2 later. But Yo replied that he's not booming anymore, he's gonna fwd siege and kill. I think he's showing dominance at that point. Norway resigned as his siege vill went fwd. We took G6. Under the leadership of the great Chief Hrolf (or Hefu in pinyin, which is the memey nickname of MrYo from his alias in HC3), I yoinked another championship.
I also thought that if we didn't take G6, we will face Vikings + Portuguese in the final game on TI and we had bad odds. It was very close.
Thanks for everyone who stayed late night in the casting stream, thanks T90 for his WC, thanks all the tough opponents. The one I should thank the most is the strong, omnipotent, handsome Mister Yo aka Chief Hrolf/Hefu. We wouldn't have won without his trust on a 2k2 noob.
