Byz were always playable on ladder. It's just that the builds vary a fair bit from most other civs to really capitalize on the bonuses. I think that's why they don't see play often at mid elo levels

Eh, Berbers have cheaper FU camels that Regen HP and the civ is still kinda meh. Don't think the byz have any problems per se. They are a flexible civ, but get outshone by better flexible civs like Chinese coz of eco bonuses
