I know this is a troll answer but I've seen it repeated often enough to expand on this. Yes, the current balance is indeed good. But balance is not everything.
Ideally we have a world where
civs have identity: each civ feels unique regarding playstyle
civs are balanced: civs feel equally...
One could do basically this, but saving checkpoints (full copy of the map, units and AI computations) of the game every 2min or so and appending them at the end of the file.
Then skipping to an arbitrary point in game becomes looking up the latest checkpoint before that, plus applying the...
In isolation, this is a nice change. Mongol hunt bonus made them OP on certain maps, and Vietnamese got a nice bonus that allows for weird build orders.
However, on a wider scale, those changes and many of the previous balance changes just make the civs feel more generic.
Eco bonuses should be...
Such things can't be decided by majority decisions.
What about disqualifying Viper? It's in the best interest of 8/9 players.
What about changing the brackets like this? For most players it's better or even, for 2 players it's way worse. Obviously gets the majority.
Just remember that it's a...
Corollary: Don't insist on Bo5's if the schedule is tight, but have each player play two (or three) Bo2's per day.
If you don't like short matches for whatever reason, don't use Swiss but something like double elimination.
As far as I understood. the bye's are given to the last position that hasn't received one yet. That's Villese first round (worst seed), then LaaaaaN (got 3-0'ed), then DauT (got 6-1'ed) and now Liereyy (same points as Yo, but Liereyy is -2 (total score 4:6) whereas Yo is +1 (total score 7:6))...
One thing missing in this analysis are the eco bonuses.
Slavs essentially get 10% cheaper hussars and 5% cheaper halbs/skirms. I'd argue this makes slavs top tier.
Similarly, not having two-man saw can hurt a bit (essentially making halbs and skirms 6% more expensive), though for some reason...
I think this is one of the best formats. Allows the players to prepare strats and surprise opponents and viewers. It's also very easy to explain it on stream, and doesn't feel arbitrary.
What I really like is asymmetric games. Arch vs kts. Aggression vs defense. Early game civ advantage vs late...
The pings will be individual per player and thus unfair.
The only way around that is to enforce a minimum lag (say, 200ms), but I highly doubt that's implemented.
As the servers will be run on Azure (most likely), you can predict your lag here: http://azurespeedtest.azurewebsites.net/ or...
So the settings as announced on stream:
Round robin between the 4 players, where each match consists of 6 games:
- Game 1&2: Arabia and a game of chess at the same time (1 pt for winning each)
- Game 3: Draw an AoE unit and let the audience decide which one is best
- Game 4: Viewer voted map...
Worked for me under wine-3.15 (Staging) and the official dotnet 4.6 (not mono) using a 32-bit wine prefix on my 64-bit linux. The HD-conversion using AoE2tools failed (function SteamAssets() showed an error even though the registry was set up correctly), but after I ran the AoE II HD...
Totally agree.
There is more to a tournament than just casting quality games.
None of the players is talking on stream about ECL or hyping it up before the games (because they can't without spoilers). As we don't know when the games are played, we can't even wish them good luck.
The casters...
