I’m not sure what percentage of this was Microsoft, but quickly adding up liquipedia #s for S and A tier tournaments in 2021 was close to 500k of prize pool. even if viewer numbers are down 50% from last year (which they probably are due to Viper/T90 and the lack of tournaments), it appears...

Would be shocked if it gets less than 15k viewers considering the most recent $20k aoe4 tourney had 15k+. And this is obviously a much larger event.

Just checked twitch tracker for month of January: AoE2 averaged 2.5k concurrent viewers and AoE4 averaged 2.1k concurrent viewers.

I would say tournament viewership is a great way to gauge interest between both games. The most recent examples we have are 15k viewers for aoe4 Winter Championship finals last weekend and today aoe2 WWC Ro of 16 had 14k viewers. Will be interesting to see what WWC draws next weekend.
