"Use common sense" people are saying.
- Was the game scheduled? Yes
- Did both players show up to play the set? No, DauT was unable to play due to outside of game issues.
- Can we wait for a delayed start? Tried to, Vinchester was willing to wait 15 minutes past the time at which he can request an admin win, as per the rules. DauT tried to sort out the hardware issues, but the store apparently did not have the required cable.
- Can we reschedule the game for a later date within the allotted time period? No, this was tried too. Vinchester is not able to play another time, life comes before AoE2, you can't expect any player to drop pre planned events for a tournament game. Additionally the game needs to be played within the time period because otherwise everything else gets delayed, which extrapolates to increased difficulty for winners to obtain potential visas or more expensive flights later on. You can't make exceptions for every potential set due to time constraints, and it is unfair to every other player who has issues who would reschedule to let DauT/Vinch play another time just because DauT happens to be a superstar.
Ok, so at this point what options are there? They can't play on the day, they can't play within the set dates, and playing outside the set dates is not an option. Common sense points to following the established rules and awarding the AW to the player who was able to play on the day.
Remove the names from the situation. Random player A vs random player B. If you ask any tournament admin what the outcome should be then you'll get the same ruling as you get here. It's the only outcome you can give that isn't horribly biased, or going to ruin the tournament if applied consistently.
DauT is not out, and this is not an unfair ruling. He can qualify through the losers bracket as this is a double elimination qualifier, or he can qualify through the second such qualifier tournament later. If he deserves to be there, he will be there.
Don't be a blind fanboy. Use common sense.
