Inventory Systems Across 3 Gaming Genres

Like everywhere else, inventory control in gaming is vital. Whether you’re slaying dragons in an RPG, dodging bullets in an FPS, or surviving the wilderness in a survival game, how you manage your inventory can make or break your success.

So here are 3 helpful tips to know.

Role-Playing Games (RPGs)

RPGs throw a ton of stuff at you—weapons, armor, potions, you name it. That’s why they need organized inventory systems to handle it all. Without a solid system, managing all that loot would be a nightmare.

Typically, RPGs let you sort and categorize your items so that it’s easy to find what you need. Plus crafting is a big deal. You gather materials and craft gear to become a badass hero.

For example, think of “Skyrim.” Your inventory helps you manage all the cool stuff you find while slaying dragons and exploring dungeons. Or “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt,” where your inventory is your lifeline in a world filled with monsters and magic. You collect herbs, monster parts, and powerful artifacts to aid you on your quest as Geralt of Rivia.

First-Person Shooters (FPS)

FPS games are all about fast action. You need quick access to your guns and ammo. That’s why they generally stick to the basics: guns, ammo, and maybe a grenade or two.

Basically, you’ve got limited slots for weapons here and so you want to choose wisely. And ammo is key. Run out, and you’re in trouble.

For example, in “Call of Duty,” your inventory is all about swapping weapons and grabbing ammo on the fly. It’s about staying light and deadly in the heat of battle. Likewise in “DOOM” where your inventory is stripped down to the essentials: big guns and even bigger demons. With each weapon serving a specific purpose, you switch between them strategically to blast your way through hordes of Hell’s minions.

Survival Games

Survival games drop you in harsh environments where every item matters.

Here too, crafting is typically key. You gather resources and craft tools, weapons, and shelter to survive. You want to remember that every item has a purpose. Food keeps you fed, water keeps you hydrated, and gear keeps you alive.

For example,  in “The Forest” you’re stranded on a creepy island, scavenging for resources to stay alive and your backpack holds everything from food and water to makeshift weapons and building materials. So it’s about staying smart and resourceful in a dangerous world. Similarly, in “Raft,” you’re adrift in the middle of the ocean on a tiny raft. Your inventory is your lifeline as you collect debris to expand your raft, gather food and water, and fend off sharks and every item you collect is essential for your survival.

Inventory is an important part of gaming and it’s a good idea to know the basics. Consider these tips.
