Hey people. I've been pplaying AoE2 for nearly six to seven years single player only( yeah that sounds pretty stupid). i've been waiting for a long time to play a multiplayer match of any sorts. I don't understand much about tournament and stuff. Just want a normal multiplayer match by any means. Can anybody give instructions?
It first depends on how you play the game I guess. Do you play via Steam or do you own a copy of the CD version?
For a stable multiplayer experience the general consensus is to download voobly and play from here. (https://www.voobly.com/) You'll have to install a userpatch and several mods of your choice. If you desire to play with all the newest expansions instead of just the old AOC, you'll have to purchase the expansions on steam. In order to play them download a compatibility patch for the HD edition to work on voobly and download the WololoKingdoms mod to play the expansions (This will only work if you have purchased the expansions on steam).
Once you're set up to actually play I think the best thing is to start and learn the most important mechanics of the game like the counters and what unit compositions work well. If you get the hang of these mechanics you can try to practise the hotkeys to gain some speed and learn some build order for more efficiency. This will buy you several 100's of hours into multiplayer to get on a solid level and from there you can learn more advanced mechanics like better micro
If you're looking for more specific info just ask away!

Welcome man! Great when people make the jump. If you do have the HD version on steam, I'd actually recommend going to HD first. The skill level is lower, it isn't as quick, and the setup isn't as daunting. I myself got frustrated when setting up voobly, what with having everything else to setup. On HD, you'd just click on multiplayer and you'll be sent to a lobby of games from which to choose. Or, if I remember correctly, you might be asked if you want to set up a game or join the lobby.
However, as Elvaenor mentioned, if you need help, don't hesitate to ask. You can PM me at any time. Also, I don't know if it was intentional, but this thread might have been posted in the wrong place.
