slam about the series that led to yet another early tournament exit.
Your mouse breaks before the games, you random into a full water map after you switch civilizations from game 1 (Huns, Vikings), you don't find the gold in game 3 but win the grush anyway only to lose to a wonder that you forgot to build. Seemed like everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Talk us through the games.
slam: G1 and G2 were just a trade off. The settings for this tourney, in my opinion, can make for very very fun games but also some that give a quick civ advantage. With Huns you have a huge advantage of no houses and fireships at the start. This means the Vikings bonus for the beginning of the game is kind of useless (plus they don't get fireships). It made these matches feel like a BO1.
In G3 I definitely had the civ advantage for the map but I did a good job of neutralizing that by not finding my gold to grush.
Last time we did an interview was when you lost to MbL in Masters of Arena 3. When I asked you about your tournament run you said: "Not completely happy with my performance this time around. [...] I felt I had made some weird decisions." Depressingly true once more?
slam: I think you already typed out what I was going to say so I don't really have too much more to add. With winning water in that map and having map control it's a 99% win if I were to build a wonder. I reminded myself before the games of that option but it's so easy to forget considering 99.999% of games I have ever played don't involve the wonder.
Also, I was so happy to know I won the game that it also enhanced the forgetfulness of building a wonder. Was waiting for that gg!
Edie famously talked about nerves getting to him and messing with his games, especially when it's Masters of Arena time and all eyes are on him. Do you think high pressure situations in 1v1 tournaments make you play worse?
slam: I didn't really have any nerves this tourney so I can't really blame it on that. I think TaToH took a good advantage of the settings which I did not.
Yes, high pressure situations, on average, make me play worse. Although not so much in this tourney (except for the panic of seeing a wonder at 100 years left).
Your best game in MoMR?
slam: Probably the one vs FeAge with my monks. I believe it also shows people that there is still an option/escape after losing water like that. The swamp pathways also help for the monks as well.
Most fun opponent to play against?
slam: In the past, probably DauT. I don't have to scout. I know he will just go scouts. <3
Also Yo, for free points to 2400/2500.
Your favorite teammate in a TG?
slam: Memb.
Favorite map that isn't called Arabia?
slam: Hmm. I really like Islands/Team Islands in a TG.
Most fun thing to do when not playing AoC?
slam: Gym and Volleyball.
